Kingston Gateway Project

Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames has identified, in their Town Centre Area Action Plan (K+20), Five primary gateways and twelve secondary gateways in to the town centre. These gateways are presented within the context of their landscape analysis and strategies that form several character areas and proposal sites.

The methodology that was followed for identifying gateways around Kingston is only one approach. There are many ways of identifying and defining gateways that depend on our experience and knowledge of the landscape.

What is a gateway?

• a means of entering somewhere or a means of defining an entry to a new place not necessary having a physical gate.
• a structure for enclosing such an opening or entrance.
• any passage by or point at which a region may be entered.

Kingston College Roundabout

Kingston College Roundabout is one of the main gateway into Kingston upon Thames coming from South.

The Gateway Proposal of the College Roundabout

My proposal for the college roundabout is to have a gateway arch which acts as a two way pass for both pedestrians and the motorist

Also to put a sculpture in the middle of the roundabout to replace the the current vegetation that is there at the moments as shown the the about picture.

Kingston's Coat of Arms

Interpretation: The shield is the ancient coat of arms of the former Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, recorded in 1572 and 1623. It bears three salmon on blue in reference to the three fisheries mentioned in Domesday Book.

I have decided to use the history of Kingston Upon Thames and its Coat of Arms (i.e using the 3 salmon fishes on the coat of arms as the sculpture on the roundabout and also carved into the arch of the gateway.
